Quem teve a ideia de cortar o tempo em fatias, a que se deu o nome de ano, foi um individuo genial.
Industrializou a esperança, fazendo-a funcionar no limite da exaustão.
Doze meses dão para qualquer ser humano se cansar e entregar os pontos.
Aí entra o milagre da renovação e tudo começa outra vez, com outro
número e outra vontade de acreditar que daqui para frente...

Estamos chegando perto do Natal, e para entrar no clima, trago para vocês algumas expressões em inglês relacionadas ao natal:

Joseph- the husband of Mary (the mother of Jesus)
magi- the wise men from the East who brought gifts for the baby Jesus

Mary- the mother of Jesus
mistletoe- a parasitic plant with white berries, traditionally used as a Christmas decoration
myrrh- a gum used for perfume or incense, one of the gifts that the three wise men gave to Jesus
nativity- the birth of a person
the Nativity- the birth of Jesus Christ
nativity play- a play that people perform at Christmas based on the birth of Jesus
new year- the start of a year; the period just before and after 1 January
New Year's Day- 1 January
New Year's Eve- 31 December
ornament- an object that adds beauty to something; a decoration
present- a thing given to somebody as a gift.
reindeer- a deer with large antlers found in some cold climates (believed to pull the sleigh for Santa Claus or Father Christmas)
Santa Claus- an imaginary being who brings presents for children on the night before Christmas Day- (also known as Father Christmas) - traditionally an old man with a red suit and white beard (Santa Claus may be based in part on the historical figure of Saint Nicholas.)
shepherd- a person who looks after sheep
sleigh- a sledge or light cart on runners pulled by horses or reindeer over snow and ice
snow- water vapour from the sky that falls as white flakes and covers the ground
star a bright point in the night sky which is a large, distant incandescent body like the sun
the star of Bethlehem- the star that announced the birth of Jesus and guided the wise men to find Him
tinsel- a decoration consisting of thin strips of shiny metal foil, traditionally used at Christmas
turkey- a bird like a large chicken, traditionally eaten at Christmas
white Christmas- a Christmas with snow on the ground
Xmas- abbreviation or informal term for Christmas

SHAKESPEARE AND "TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU"

No mês de outubro postei algumas fotos da capacitação que participei na cidade de Altônia...algum...muito tempo depois, cumprindo minha promessa vou postar as sequências didáticas que trabalhamos lá e que eu já desenvolvi com meus alunos e deu suuuuuuuper certo. Estas atividades foram desenvolvidas para facilitar e enriquecer o trabalho com o Livro Didático Público - LEM - Inglês, aqui do Paraná (Disponível no portal dia-a-dia Educação). São várias aulas, hein...VAMOS LÁ... Iniciar a aula questionando aos alunos se eles já ouviram falar em William Shakespeare? Se conhecem alguma obra dele? Em seguida, passar o vídeo: "O Menestrel - Um dia Você Aprende - Shaeskepeare", pedindo que os alunos prestem atenção na maneira como o poema é declamado, no modo de falar, nos gestos, etc...


Apresentar uma rápida biografia do poeta em estudo, apresentando as características principais deste gênero textual.

William Shakespeare was one of the greatest poets and playwrights of all times. He was born in April, 1564, in a city called Stratford-upon-Avon, in England. He was the son of Mary and John Shakespeare. William was their third child and their first male baby. He was educated mainly at The New King’s School. As an adult, he married Anne and had three children. Later he moved to London. In London, Shakespeare started his successful career as a playwright and a poet. Around the year of 1592, Shakespeare was already famous for his drama work. By this period, he wrote “The Comedy of Errors” and “The Taming of the Shrew”. Later, he wrote “Titus Andronicus”, “Richard II”, “King John” and “Love’s Labour’s Lost”. His plays were shown at the famous Globe Theatre. Probably between 1599 and 1601 Shakespeare wrote “Hamlet” and after that he also wrote great stories. His style changed radically from comedy to tragedy. Shakespeare ended his career working with the new writer from “The King´s Men”, John Fletcher. According to some biographers, he wrote his three final plays with John. Other of his famous plays are “Macbeth”, written in the honor of a Scottish king; “King Lear”, a play about ingratitude; “The Tempest”, with a lyrical taste; “Romeo and Juliet”, a remarkable tragedy; and “The Taming of the Shrew”, presented as “a play inside a play”. Shakespeare became a rich man and got back to his hometown and died. Maybe because of a fever. It happened in 1616. The famous writer Alexandre Dumas stated: “After God, it was Shakespeare who created the most”. Where was Shakespeare from? Where did he start his carrer? b. Shakespeare was a playwright and a poet. Define “playwright” (look the word up in a dictionary). c. Which of Shakespeare’s plays cited in the text above is familiar to you? Can you write a few words about this play? d. What’s Dumas’ opinion about Shakespeare? Do you agree with him? (Conversar com os alunos, tentando saber o que eles consiguiram entender do poema e deixar que eles façam seus comentários sobre o mesmo. Se for necessário - com certeza será - passe o vídeo outras vezes, só então entregue o poema impresso)

- Para que os alunos entendam melhor o contexto em que o poema está inserido, vamos fazer uma breve análise da sinopse do fime. (Apresentar as características deste gênero textual)
THE FILM
The film “10 Things I Hate About You” takes place in a modern high school in the U.S. Its plot is based on Shakespeare’s play: there are these two sisters whose father is a very strict man. He has a rule: the youngest sister will only be able to have a date when her older sister does first. The problem is that the sister is a ferocious girl. She hates the idea of having boyfriends and she prefers to study and read. Only a very brave man could tame this ‘shrew’... Everything happens in an everyday teenager environment, which includes peer pressure, tough teachers, school popularity and other issues. While watching the film, we can realize that a lot of characters’ names come from the original Shakespeare’s play. The oldest sister’s name is Kat, which is a reference to Katherina, the main character of “The Taming of the Shrew”. Her surname is Stratford, which is also a reference to Stratfordupon-Avon, the city where Shakespeare himself was born. Patrick’s surname, Verona, is the name of Petruchio’s hometown. Patrick is the brave guy that faces Kat’s toughness, and his name reminds the name of Shakespeare’s original, Petruchio. The name of the school in the film is “Padua”, the city where the original play takes place. At a certain point of the film, one of the characters says a line of Shakespeare’s 56 sonnet: “Sweet love, renew thy force”. Another character, Cameron, says: “I burn, I pine, I perish”, an original line from “The Taming of the Shrew”. Despite these references and others you’ll notice, the film is made for modern teenagers and the language used in it is very informal. Let’s watch it now?

- Answer the following questions in English or in Portuguese:
1. What are the references showed in the film “10 Things I Hate About You”, about Shakespeare and his writings? (Try to watch some parts of the film again to confirm these references).
2. Look up in dictionaries and give the meaning of the original Shakespeare’s title “The Taming of the Shrew” in Portuguese.
3. Why hasn’t the title of the play received a literal translation in Brazil? Explain it. Why does it happen to other films’ and plays’ titles?
4. Do you know any other films’ or plays’ titles that were adapted (not literally translated)? Give 10 examples of English titled films and the names they received in Brazil (you can research in a rental store).
5. What’s your opinion about Kat’s father behavior? Is it too repressive? Can you compare it to real life parent’s behavior? Do they act like that sometimes? In your opinion, why does it happen?

As an English student, I expected this film to fail miserably in an attempt to recreate the humor and the magic in Shakespeare original. However, I believe that the director managed to retain the ideas and the punch that the Master wrote. Having seen the film, I went out the second it was released on video and purchase a copy. My veredict? 11/10-just can’t get higher. Plus, Heath Ledger-mmm...

Ten things I hate about this movie: it wasn’t funny, inventive, smart, witty, dramatic, dazzling, spectacular, powerful. It didn’t mean anything to me as a teen, and Shakespeare would roll over in his grave if he knew what kind of movies were made from his plays.

It was a great movie showing the hopes and the beliefs of some teenagers and I do believe that it deserves a special place in our movie culture.

- No final pedi que montassem slides do poema, da música; apresentação da música (cantar); declamar o poema; declamar a música (como se fosse poema)...

Foi um trabalho bem gostoso, e apesar de utilizar o mesmo tema, não ficou cansativo, pois foi abordado de formas diferentes, com gêneros diferentes...

SOBRE JEQUITIBÁS E EUCALIPTOS - Rubem Alves


Que aconteceu aos tropeiros? Meu pai se consolou dizendo que, naquele tempo, tropeiro era dono de empresa de transportes. O fato, entretanto, é que o tropeiro desapareceu ou se meteu para além da correria do mundo civilizado, onde a vida anda ao passo lento e tranqüilizante das batidas quaternárias dos cascos no chão...

E aí comecei a pensar sobre o destino de outras profissões que foram sumindo devagarinho. Nada parecido com aqueles que morrem de enfarte, assustando todo mundo. Aconteceu com elas o que acontece com aqueles velhinhos de quem a morte se esqueceu; e que vão aparecendo cada vez menos na rua, e vão encolhendo, mirrando, sumindo, lembrados de quando em vez pelos poucos amigos que lhes restam, até que todos morrem e o velhinho fica, esquecido de todos.. .E quando morre e o enterro passa, cada um olha para o outro e pergunta: "Mas quem era este?". Não foi assim que aconteceu com aqueles médicos de antigamente, sem especialização, que montavam a cavalo, atendiam parto, erisipela, prisão de ventre, pneumonia, se assentavam para o almoço, quando não ficavam para pernoitar, e depois eram padrinhos dos meninos e não tinham vergonha de acompanhar o enterro? Também o boticário, um dos homens mais ilustres e lidos da cidade, presença cívica certa ao lado do prefeito e do padre, pronto a discursar quando o bacharel faltava, tendo sempre uma frase em latim para ser citada na hora certa... E o boticário fazia suas poções, e a gente lavava, em água quente, os vidros vazios em que ele iria pôr os seus remédios. E me lembro também do tocador de realejo que desapareceu, eu penso, porque com o barulho que se faz nas cidades, não há ninguém que ouça as canções napolitanas que a maquineta tocava. E me lembro também do destino triste do caixeiro-viajante, cujo progressivo crepúsculo e irremediável solidão foram descritos por Arthur Miller, em A morte do caixeiro-viajante.

Foi o tema que me deram "a formação do educador", que me fez passar de tropeiros a caixeiros. Todas, profissões extintas ou em extinção.

Educadores, onde estarão? Em que covas terão se escondido? Professores, há aos milhares. Mas professor é profissão, não é algo que se define por dentro, por amor: Educador, ao contrário, não é profissão; é vocação. E toda vocação nasce de um grande amor, de uma grande esperança.

Profissões e vocações são como plantas. Vicejam e florescem em nichos ecológicos, naquele conjunto precário de situações que as tornam possíveis e - quem sabe? - necessárias. Destruído esse habitat, a vida vai se encolhendo, murchando, fica triste, mirra, entra para o fundo da terra, até sumir.
